1.Overview
Our gastroenterology department operates as an integrated clinical, research, and teaching unit with its own inpatient wards, outpatient clinics, and endoscopy center. Our mission: All for the Children's Gut Health, Building a Healthy 'Intestinal' City Together. The department specializes in pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (including very early-onset IBD), diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection in children, pediatric endoscopic procedures (such as neonatal gastro-colonoscopy, double-balloon enteroscopy, and minimally invasive endoscopic therapies), and nutritional support for children with chronic gastrointestinal conditions. We regularly hold IBD multidisciplinary team (IBD-MDT) academic seminars and maintain active collaborations with renowned international experts to foster global multicenter partnerships. We operate WeChat official accounts for "Jiujiu Care for Pediatric IBD" and "Fudan Pediatric IBD Diagnosis, Treatment and Research Base" to disseminate medical knowledge to the public. In clinical nursing, our specialized services encompass PICC catheterization for severely malnourished children, management of complex wounds/stoma complications, feeding care via nasogastric/nasointestinal tubes and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), and integrated drug and non-drug pain management for acupuncture-related pain.
The department boasts a well-structured and highly skilled medical team, consisting of 25 specialist physicians (including 11 with senior professional titles), 16 specialized nursing staff, 1 doctoral supervisor, 1 master’s supervisor, currently enrolled 2 master's students, and 5 doctoral candidates. Over the past five years, the department has secured multiple research grants, including the National Key R&D Program, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), the Shanghai Natural Science Foundation, and Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau projects. Young core members of the department have been awarded prestigious talent programs, such as: Shanghai Excellent Young Medical Talent Training Program, Shanghai Oriental Talents Youth Program, Shanghai "Medical Rising Star" Young Medical Specialist Training Program, Shanghai "Rising Star" Project Training Program, Shanghai "Rising Star" Project (Yangfan Special Project), Fudan University Affiliated Pediatric Hospital Excellent Young Specialist Physician Cultivation Program. 2. Test and Procedures
Our pediatric gastroenterology department handles over 80,000 outpatient visits annually, ranking first among children's hospitals in Shanghai and nationwide. It has established multidisciplinary clinics for pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), as well as specialized clinics for gastrointestinal allergies, enteral tube placement/gastrostomy, constipation, and IBD. In 2015, the department achieved a milestone by successfully diagnosing China's first case of very early-onset IBD caused by IL10RA gene deficiency and treating it with umbilical cord blood stem cell transplantation successfully.
Our department performs more than 7,000 routine gastrointestinal endoscopies annually, including over 1,000 complex (Level III/IV) endoscopic procedures. This volume ranks us first among major pediatric hospitals in Shanghai. We pioneered several advanced endoscopic techniques in China, including double-balloon enteroscopy, minimally invasive endoscopic treatments for pediatric achalasia and gastroesophageal varices. In 2014, our department performed peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) on the world's youngest patient at the time – an 11-month-old female infant.
Services offered include routine electronic gastroscopy and colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, enteroscopy, intraoperative endoscopy, and gastrointestinal examinations for neonates and infants. The department provides a range of therapeutic procedures: endoscopic polypectomy, hemostasis for gastrointestinal bleeding, foreign body removal, endoscopic tube placement, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy/jejunostomy (PEG/J), Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy (ERAT), and 24-hour esophageal pH-impedance monitoring.
