Children's Hospital of Fudan University established the "Foreign Guest/Overseas Chinese Ward" in October 1993, which was the first medical institution in China to offer foreign-related medical services, with the service tenet of "patients first, quality first". In 1999, it was renamed as "Special Needs Ward". In 2003, it was renamed as "Special Needs Medical Center". In 2019, it was renovated and upgraded, relying on a strong pediatric medical team, and established the "International Medical Center". In 2023, it successfully applied to a pilot unit for international medical tourism in Shanghai's public hospitals. The International Medical Center covers an area of nearly 4000m2, with four functional areas: outpatient department, inpatient department, health management department and vaccination department.
The outpatient department features specialized clinics covering all pediatric subspecialties, multidisciplinary team (MDT) clinics, and rare disease specialty clinics. It provides 24-hour emergency services and onestop innovative services, serving 140,000 children from 35 countries and regions annually. It also has an Shanghai International Consultation Hall where Chinese and foreign experts collaboratively develop individualized treatment plans for children with complex and rare diseases.
The inpatient department has 26 family rooms providing internationalstandard medical services. The vaccination department designs personalized vaccination plans for children worldwide, particularly for those with underlying conditions such as tumors or immune disorders. The health management department offers comprehensive health services, including scientific checkups and evaluations, throughout the entire growth cycle of children.
The medical expert team consists of 160 specialists from various disciplines, including foreign experts. Over 70% of the team members have overseas study or work experience, ensuring their ability to provide international-standard medical services. In addition, International Medical Department is equipped with a wide range of cutting-edge medical apparatus, including, but not limited to, O-arm machine, Da Vinci Surgical System and PET-CT imaging technology, providing robust support for precision diagnosis and treatment.
