1. Overview
The Department of Pharmacy of the Children's Hospital of Fudan University was established in 1952 and has since become a pioneering and leading institution in pediatric pharmacy in China. After more than seven decades of development, the department has built a well-structured, highly skilled, and innovative team comprising by 78 staff members, including 5 senior professional pharmacists, 3 Ph.D. degree holders, and 16 master's degree holders. Under the leadership of Professor Zhiping Li, the department is committed to enhancing medication safety and rational drug use in children. It has developed and implemented an intelligent prescription review system for pediatric medications, which has obtained 134 software copyrights and multiple awards, including the Shanghai Hospital Management Innovation Award and the Top Ten Valuable Cases in Pharmacy Management of the China Hospital Management Case Competition.
The department consists of nine subunits, including the emergency/special needs pharmacy, outpatient Chinese and Western medicine pharmacies, drug warehouse, clinical pharmacy research laboratory, and intravenous admixture service centers. It fully implements the JCI international healthcare quality and safety management system, establishing closed-loop management from drug procurement to patient administration to ensure medication safety. The department was approved as a Shanghai Key Specialty in Clinical Pharmacy in 2017. Also, the department was selected as one of the first national pilot units for embedded clinical pharmacist models in 2024, and became a National Health Commission Training Base for Pharmacists in Short Supply.
The Department of Pharmacy has also achieved remarkable results in research and education, undertaking more than 20 national and provincial/ministerial-level projects, including those from the National Natural Science Foundation, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission, and Shanghai Municipal Health Commission. The team led by him/her ranked second in the pharmacy discipline in the 2019 Shanghai Top-Tier Hospital Research Competitiveness Evaluation Report released by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission. In 2019, as the lead of the Key Innovation Team Project in Clinical Pharmacy and Regulatory Science at Fudan University Shanghai Medical College—a high-level local university initiative in Shanghai—he/she comprehensively advanced the integration of hospital and academic disciplines to foster the development of pharmacy and regulatory science.
The team leader has been honored with the 25th Wu Jieping-Paul Janssen Medical and Pharmaceutical Award, the 2022 Shanghai Leading Talent Program by Shanghai Municipal Human Resources and Social Security Bureau, and Shanghai Excellent Academic Leader by Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality in 2019. Focusing on pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies of the frontline anti-infective drug piperacillin-tazobactam in neonates, precise drug therapy for children with complex and critical diseases, and comprehensive clinical evaluation of pediatric medications, the team led by him/her has received the Shanghai Pharmacy Science and Technology Award (Applied Category) second and third prizes, as well as the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association Science and Technology Award second and third prizes on multiple occasions.
The department has published 100 SCI papers and obtained 16 authorized invention patents along with 1 international patent. The department has served as Editor-in-Chief, Chief Translator, Deputy Editor-in-Chief, or contributing author for more than 10 Chinese and international monographs; led or participated in the formulation of multiple expert consensus documents, promoting safe and rational medication use in pediatric clinical practice. The department maintains close collaboration with pharmaceutical institutions in multiple countries, fostering international exchange and talent development in pediatric pharmacy.
2. Specialized Features
Our department not only provides professional pharmaceutical care and rational medication guidance for children but also collaborates with multidisciplinary teams to develop individualized treatment plans for each patient. We deliver distinctive pharmaceutical services, education, and research in the following areas:
• Clinical pharmacists practice and capacity building
We offer standardized clinical pharmacist training, tutor training, advanced study programs, and international exchange programs, including

• Personalized Precision Medication Platform
Based on quantitative pharmacology and therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) data, we conduct 19 TDM assays for key drugs used in major organ transplantation, critically ill patients, and severe chronic diseases (including tacrolimus, mycophenolic acid, vancomycin, meropenem, voriconazole, SMZ/TMP, busulfan, etc.), with approximately 20,000 tests annually, providing a scientific basis for individualized precise dosing for children, and we lead several national multicenter studies on precision pharmacotherapy.
• Intelligent Prescription Review
Established China’s first pediatric medication knowledge base, a pre prescription review system, and a pediatric individualized medication monitoring platform, ensuring safe and rational drug use through multiple dimensions. This initiative was recognized as a National Model Case of Modern Hospital Pharmacy Management by the National Health Commission in 2022.
• Pharmacy Outpatient and Consultation Services
We operate a specialized pediatric pharmacy clinic, receiving about 100 patients monthly, offering medication guidance, adverse reaction interpretation, and drug interaction analysis.
• Pharmaceutical Consultations
We complete over 1,800 in-hospital pharmaceutical consultations annually, covering critical care, anti-infective therapy, organ transplantation, and other areas.
• Drug Clinical Trials and Evaluation
Participating in new drug observational studies, drug utilization evaluations, and pediatric dosage form development.
• Public education
Published over 340 popular science articles, videos, and live streams for parents and young readers, with cumulative views exceeding 9 million. Organize 15 annual health outreach activities in schools and kindergartens, serving a total of about 140,000 participants.
