1. Overview
In 1979, our hospital established the Pediatric Research Institute and subsequently founded the Immunology Research Laboratory, followed by the launch of a specialized immunology outpatient clinic. After years of accumulation, the Clinical Immunology/Allergy Department was officially established in 2014, becoming the first clinical immunology specialty in China. It primarily focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, adverse reactions to vaccinations, and other complex immunological and allergic diseases. Over the past decade, the department has achieved steady progress and development, now boasting over 20 beds and more than 20 medical professionals engaged in clinical, educational, and research activities. In August 2023, our hospital officially inaugurated the National Children's Medical Center Infection, Infectious Diseases, and Immunology Building, further advancing the construction of the pediatric infectious diseases, infectious diseases, and immunology discipline cluster.
The establishment of specialized clinical immunology/allergy departments and the expansion of disciplinary fields have achieved a series of innovative accomplishments guided by clinical needs. Pioneering work has been conducted in multiple areas, including primary immunodeficiency, secondary immunodeficiency, infectious immunology, adverse reactions to vaccinations, prolonged unexplained fever, and food allergies. These efforts primarily rely on modern technological approaches and the concept of personalized precision diagnosis and treatment, with a patient-centered approach. The department has established a unique "Three-Type Discussion" system and a multidisciplinary collaboration mechanism adapted to the development of modern medicine, enabling patients to maximize the benefits of advancements in modern science and technology. Over the past few years, the immunology team has identified at least three new pathogenic genes for immune-related disorders (IEI) and provided effective treatments for some patients. These findings have been published in journals such as Nature, Science Immunology, and Cell.
In April 2023, our hospital also led the establishment of the National Children's Medical and Clinical Research Center IEI Alliance. Many members of our department hold positions in various domestic academic organizations, including the National Immunization Program Expert Advisory Committee (member), the Immunology Group of the Pediatric Branch of the Chinese Medical Association (deputy leader), the Allergy Group of the Pediatric Branch of the China Medical Doctor Association (leader), the Rheumatology and Immunology Group of the Pediatric Branch of the China Medical Doctor Association (deputy leader), and the Immunology Group of the Pediatric Branch of the Shanghai Medical Association (leader). They have also participated in the editorial committees of multiple IEI international academic organizations and journals, including the Asia-Pacific Society for Immunodeficiency (APSID), the European Society for Immunodeficiency (ESID), and the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Immunology.Our department has also selected as a research-oriented discipline by the China Research Hospital Association. The department's work has successively received the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award (2021), the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award (2022), the Third Prize of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association Science and Technology Award (2023), and the Third Prize of the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Award (2024).
