Established in 2009, the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive, Burn and Dermatologic Surgery has, through more than a decade of development, grown into a nationally renowned center for pediatric plastic and reconstructive care. The department holds a leading position in China in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital craniofacial malformations, particularly in the staged management of cleft lip and palate, the comprehensive treatment of craniosynostosis, and the correction of auricular deformities. It has now developed into a comprehensive clinical specialty integrating medical care, teaching, and research.
Overview
The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive, Burn and Dermatologic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University was among the earliest pediatric plastic surgery specialties established in children’s hospitals in China. It enjoys a strong national reputation in the diagnosis and treatment of congenital craniofacial malformations and has substantial academic influence in this field.
Major Areas of Expertise
The department’s principal areas of expertise include the staged management of cleft lip and palate, employing repair techniques such as the Millard and Fisher procedures in combination with absorbable suturing methods that eliminate the need for suture removal; the diagnosis and treatment of craniosynostosis, including comprehensive surgical management with posterior cranial vault expansion by distraction osteogenesis and fronto-orbital advancement; the management of auricular deformities, ranging from noninvasive, nonsurgical correction to auricular reconstruction for microtia; the management of micrognathia, including Pierre Robin sequence, with mandibular osteotomy, distraction osteogenesis, and comprehensive respiratory function assessment; the management of hemifacial microsomia, including autologous fat grafting and mandibular distraction osteogenesis; and other specialized procedures, including surgical correction of orbital hypertelorism, reductive, reconstructive, and ablative procedures for macroglossia, and laser treatment for pigmented nevi and scars.
Specialty Services
Equipped with advanced medical facilities, the department is committed to providing highly precise and individualized reconstructive care. Its clinical services include meticulous absorbable-suture closure following excision of superficial masses, flap-based wound reconstruction, and the application of tissue expanders, all of which contribute significantly to improved postoperative recovery and outcomes.
Clinical Team
The department is staffed by a highly qualified medical team consisting of one chief physician, one attending physician, and two resident physicians; all four hold doctoral degrees.
Department Director
Dong Chenbin, M.D., serves as Deputy Director of the General Surgery Diagnosis and Treatment Center and Director of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive, Burn and Dermatologic Surgery at Children’s Hospital of Fudan University. He is a Chief Physician, Associate Professor, and Master’s Supervisor.
He currently serves as a member of the Pediatric Plastic Surgery Group of the Plastic Surgery Branch of the Chinese Medical Association; a member of the 2nd Craniofacial Surgery Group of the Professional Committee of Reconstructive and Rehabilitative Surgery of the Chinese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine; a council member of the 1st Council of the Craniofacial Surgery Branch of the China Association of Plastic and Aesthetics; and a member of the 1st Medical Committee of the Smileangel Foundation.
His principal research focus is clinical and basic research on congenital craniofacial malformations. He has published more than 30 papers in Chinese and international academic journals and holds 10 patents. He has received multiple honors, including the Shanghai Young Post Expert Award, the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission May Fourth Youth Medal, the Outstanding Young Doctor Award of Fudan University, and the Diligence and Entrepreneurship Award of Children’s Hospital of Fudan University.
