1.Overview
Historical Development:
The pediatric neurology specialty at the Children's Hospital of Fudan University was established in 1978. Professor Sun Daokai led the EEG laboratory and initiated the neurology outpatient clinic, making it as one of the earliest pediatric neurology specialties in China at that time. In 1992, the neurology inpatient ward was established with Professor Sun Daokai serving as the head of the neurology specialty group. From 1999 to 2009, Professor Zhou Shuizhen assumed the role of director of the neurology ward. In 2009, the Department of Neurology was formally established as an independent unit, with Professor Wang Yi as the academic leader and Professor Zhou Shuizhen as the department director. In 2024, Associate Director Yu Lifei took over leadership responsibilities.The department has continuously advanced over the past 45 years in clinical services, scientific research, education, and talent development. Today, it has evolved into a leading pediatric neurology team with distinctive specialty features, high-quality clinical and translational research capabilities.
Academic Status:
The department’s academic leader and director hold key positions in prominent national academic organizations, including serving as the chair of the Pediatric Neurology Subspecialty Group of the Chinese Medical Association, vice-chair of the Pediatric Neurology Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and leadership roles in the China Anti-Epilepsy Association and Shanghai Anti-Epilepsy Association. As part of the National Children’s Medical Center, the Department of Neurology is poised to become: A National Model Center for Comprehensive Epilepsy Diagnosis and Treatment in Pediatrics, A National Clinical and Research Hub for Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Critical/Complex Neurological Conditions, and Rare Diseases in Children, and a Leading Training Base for Pediatric Neurology Professionals in China.

The Department of Neurology demonstrates distinctive strengths in standardized clinical diagnosis and treatment protocols, application of innovative clinical technologies, management of specialized and rare diseases, multidisciplinary team (MDT) approaches.We lead multiple national key research projects and actively engage in international exchanges, regularly organizing large-scale international conferences and national continuing medical education programs. Our achievements include publishing high-impact SCI-indexed research papers, authoring multiple professional textbooks, developing clinical practice guidelines and expert consensus documents and participating in international multicenter drug clinical trials.
Department Overview:
The Department of Neurology comprises Neurology Ward,Specialty Neurology Clinics (handling over 80,000 outpatient visits annually),Neuroelectrophysiology Monitoring Unit (serving the entire hospital, including Neurology, Neurosurgery, PICU/NICU/CICU with 30 EEG machines; performing 20,000 routine EEGs and 100,000 prolonged EEG monitoring sessions annually),Neuromuscular Disease Center (incorporating neuromuscular pathology/molecular diagnostics and EMG laboratories) and Sleep Monitoring Center (with 4 independent polysomnography monitoring units). Our Epilepsy Center established in 2005, the center has evolved over nearly two decades into a comprehensive multidisciplinary program integrating:Neurology,Neurosurgery,Neuroelectrophysiology,Neuroimaging,Molecular Diagnostics,Psychology,Pharmacy,Nursing and Critical Care.The Center has developed standardized management protocols and operational models, earning recognition as: One of China's first CAAE-accredited EEG Training Bases (2018), China’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center by CAAE (2020),National Key Clinical Construction Project(2023).
Talent Structure:
The department consists of 30 neurologists (including 5 with senior professional titles, 10 with associate senior titles, 10 with intermediate titles, and 5 with junior titles; among them, 14 hold doctoral degrees and 10 hold master’s degrees), 10 technicians, 16 nurses, and 5 administrative staff. The department also includes 4 postgraduate supervisors (1 doctoral supervisor and 4 master’s supervisors). Most of the senior staff have overseas study or advanced training experience, and several neurologists and technicians hold CAAE EEG certification (including 2 advanced certificates and 12 intermediate certificates).
