Overview:
Established in 2004, the Department of Ophthalmology provides comprehensive, child-centered eye care spanning screening, diagnosis, medical therapy, and complex surgery. We are designated as a Shanghai Municipal Children’s Visual Health Standardized Diagnosis and Treatment Center (2022) and Comprehensive Ophthalmic Diagnosis and Treatment Center (2024). In 2024, we became a key member of the China Myopia Prevention and Control Capacity Building Alliance. Led by Department Chief Dr. Yang (Deputy Chair of the Ophthalmology Group of both the Pediatrics Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Pediatrics Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association), our team combines clinical excellence with innovation and research-driven practice.
Our multidisciplinary team includes 18 physicians (1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, 12 attending physicians, and 3 resident physicians), 14 optometrists, and 7 specialized nurses. We operate an independent inpatient ward with 10 dedicated beds and a day surgery unit, performing more than 2,000 procedures under general anesthesia annually and managing approximately 190,000 outpatients visits each year. We have pioneered several techniques in China, including central plication of the rectus muscle for small-angle strabismus,
Botulinum Toxin injection for strabismus and infant (including neonatal) fundus fluorescein angiography, as well as early prevention and treatment strategies for pathological myopia. Our subspecialty structure encompasses strabismus and amblyopia, pediatric retinal diseases, and eyelid and orbital disorders, supported by more than 10 specialized pediatric ophthalmology clinics.
Research and clinical practice advance in parallel in our department. We have completed multiple multicenter clinical studies funded by the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and Shanghai Shen Kang, led projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, initiated several high-quality randomized controlled trials in recent years, and publish more than 10 SCI-indexed papers annually in internationally renowned journals, such as JAMA Ophthalmology.
Test and Procedures
Our specialists in Ophthalmology department not only treat children and adolescents with diseases and conditions but also work with teams of doctors trained in many areas to determine the most appropriate treatment for each child's needs.
