Department of Clinical Nutrition

The Nutrition Room was established in 1952 and was renamed the Clinical Nutrition Department in July 2015. It is responsible for the integrated management of clinical nutrition screening, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment throughout the hospital, conducting nutrition ward rounds, nutrition consultations and nutrition outpatient services. It provides dietary, enteral, and parenteral nutrition therapy for patients with complex, rare, critical conditions and major surgeries while supplying regular diets, therapeutic meals, and enteral nutrition support for nearly 1,000 hospital beds. It was recognized as a Clinical Nutrition Demonstration Unit by the National Health Commission's Institute of Hospital Management. Besides, it also serves as a National Training Base for Pediatric Nutrition Standards and Norms, and one of the clinical nutrition teaching practice sites for medical universities in Shanghai.
Recent achievements include participation in 4 multicenter clinical studies, contribution to 3 clinical guidelines/expert consensus documents, co-authorship/translation of four professional textbooks, and publication of 16 research papers.
Key Collaborations & Milestones
•    2010: Launched joint rounds with the Department of Nephrology to provide personalized nutrition guidance and follow-up for children with CKD.
•    2011: Pioneered ketogenic diet therapy with the Department of Neurology, becoming one of China’s earliest centers to launch a ketogenic diet for the treatment of refractory epilepsy.
•    2016: Joined the multidisciplinary team (MDT) for biliary atresia. As of 2025, the clinical nutrition department has joined 28 multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).
•    2022–2023: Awarded the designation of one of the first national “clinical nutrition Pilot and Demonstration Unit” by the National Institute of Hospital Administration.
•    2024:Awarded the designation of a “Standardized Pediatric Nutrition Clinic” by the Pediatric Nutrition Committee of the Chinese Association of Maternal and Child Health.
•    2025:Awarded the designations of a “Standardized Pediatric Nutrition Clinic” and a “Standardized Pediatric Obesity Clinic” by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission.
