neurosurgery, oncology surgery, ENT department, anaesthesiology, department of traditional Chinese medicine, department of dermatology, stomatology, psychology, and child health care & rehabilitation center, etc. To fulfill the increasing desire for convenient and prompt medication and operation, and take the advantage of subdiscipline crossover, centers for minimally invasive surgery, cardiovascular disorders, hematology & oncology, epilepsy, liver diseases, kidney & urology, audition disorders and asthma have been established. In recent years, some novel technologies have been developed or introduced by the hospital as pioneer in China, such as NO inhalation, hypothermia, liver and kidney transplantation, separation of complicated conjoined twins, etc.
Annually, there are about 200 postgraduate students and over 200 fellows being trained in the hospital. The hospital was granted as Resident Training Base by the Ministry of Health in 2006. Over 20 national continuing medical education (CME) courses were held annually.
Pediatric Institute Fudan University, the main research platform established by the hospital, has been designated to set up the “key laboratory on neonatology” by the Ministry of Health. The national key technology R&D program has been successful undertaken by neonatology and cardiology team in the 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th national five-year plan. Over 10 national and provincial prizes have been awarded by central or municipal government for the advancement of science and technology. More than 200 papers are published in international and national scientific journals annually. “Chinese Journal of Evidence-based Pediatrics” and the Chinese version of “Pediatrics” are published in the hospital.
International academic exchanges have consistently been put on a high priority. Annually, the hospital hosts more than 80 lectures delivered by foreign experts. Partner relationship has been established with 18 medical institutes abroad. A series of international symposia have been successfully held, including the Shanghai International Pediatric Forum (SIPF), Asia-Pacific Symposium on Pediatric Endocrinology, China-Korea-Japan Pediatric Heart Forum, Pediatric Cardiovascular Symposium, and International Pediatric Pharmacology Symposium, etc. Four Sino-Canada advanced pediatric training programs, including neonatology, cardiology and cardiac surgery, emergency medicine and infectious disease, have been launched for training potential pediatric leaders for China.
Upon the support of central and local government, a new children’s medical center symbolized with 21st Century’s standard will be launched into operations in 2007 in Gudai & Wanyuan Road, Minhang District, Shanghai. The hospital will be equipped with 600 beds, covering an area of 26 acres and a building area of 78,015 square meters. The new hospital will embody “green” theories of intelligence, reasonable, economy, energy-saving, and environment protection in its architecture and administration. Meanwhile, outpatient service and the clinic for foreigners will be reserved in Fenglin Road, the original site of the hospital, to meet the need of local residents and foreigners.
